Deconstructing Ashtanga

Ashtanga. Often thought to be intimidating, rigid, unwelcoming, and inaccessible.

In this 5-week series, co-teachers Joyce San Pedro and Amy Reed will dispel the myths and address any fears and concerns about practicing Ashtanga. They'll introduce the practice in a friendly and approachable format - appropriate for ALL bodies and ALL levels of experience. Each class will build upon the week before, as students learn and apply the Tristana method of breath, focus, and posture as we explore the Primary Series. At the end of the series, students will have a foundation in Ashtanga that can be the basis of a home practice, as well as the confidence and comfort to step into a Mysore or Led class

Intro to Tai Chi & Qigong

Introduction to the principles of Tai Chi and Qi Gong.

Qi gong and Tai Chi are two closely related activities that when practiced correctly on a regular bases can reduce stress and improve your quality of life no matter what age or physical condition. A carefully designed combination of Qi Gong and health enhancing Tai Chi is composed of four components:

Gentle Movement

• Breath Practice

• Self-Applied Massage

• Relaxation Practice Through Meditation and Visualization

Tai chi and Qi Gong are simple exercise programs thousands of years old and yet easy to learn without added cost of special equipment or special clothing.

There is a spontaneous self-healing, self-medicating, self-rehabilitating component in every person’s body, mind, spirit interactivity. Even though a disease may come from the outside, as in a virus, the internal healing mechanism of the immune system is the most important healer. A doctor may set a broken leg, but it is our body that repairs the break. The most profound medicine is already in us. We can learn and apply methods to activate the medicine within and its ability to help our bodies heal. Vitality cultivation -- Tai Chi, Qi Gong (pronounced chee gung) and Yoga -- are systems of health promotion based on ancient Asian medicine. They can be very easy to learn and simple to apply.

The ancients knew that by practicing Qi Gong and Tai Chi they were creating a more focused mind and a healthy energetic body. Please join me and explore the path to  these self healing, meditative movements that can improve your health and reduce your stress on your terms.

Intro To Bhakti and Tantra

An Introduction to Bhakti and Tantra

Yoga philosophy is a deep and bountiful well. Come learn about two of the most important threads in Indian thought and how they can help you deepen your practice of yoga, and day-to-day experiences.

Bhakti Yoga is the practice of devotion, and tantra is the philosophy of a non-duality between the sacred and profane. Come learn how these two paths interweave and deepen each other, and most importantly, how to practice them authentically and effectively. We will also practice one of the main methods in both threads, chanting of mantra.

About Renee:

Renee (aka Radharani) is a yoga teacher and singer of Indian and world devotional and sacred music. She began teaching yoga in 2003 and spent more than 4 years living in India studying philosophy and music and undertaking pilgrimages to remote sacred places. In 2008, she met kundalini/kriya master Dr. Vagish Shastri in Varanasi, India. After studying sanskrit and philosophy with him for several years, and editing several of his books, he empowered her to offer his kundalini kriya yoga teachings and energy. She also sat at the feet of great masters of devotional practice and learned the deep teachings of Bhakti Yoga. She now takes people on pilgrimages to sacred sites in India, teaches voice and chant, and performs sacred music with many of todays most influential devotional musicians. Her album of original music Just One Drop (2016) has received acclaim in yoga circles throughout the world.

Hurricane Harvey Relief

Undies for Everyone is a non profit organization accepting donations to help people affected by hurricane Harvey. Clean underwear is something we all take for granted, until we don't have it. Normally a non-profit dedicated to supporting Houston and Dallas area schools and shelters with new underwear for youths in need, they have expanded to help provide for and support all youths affected by the recent hurricanes. As of September 11th, they have collected and distributed 300,650 pairs of brand new underwear to people in need of all ages.

Imagine losing your entire home and way of life, then having no clean undergarments to wear less than a day or two later, and no way to clean them - this is just one of the unspoken numerous problems that people in disaster situations go through on a daily basis. This organization does incredibly important and often overlooked work and unlike national level charities with huge budgets and staff overhead, they are located nearby affected disaster areas and exist almost entirely of volunteers.

Want to help in unique and much needed way?  Please join us for a donation based class this Saturday, 9/16 from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm.  Experience a unique and invigoration class encompassing an hour vinyasa-flow practice followed by 30 minutes of blissful restorative yoga.  This playful and centering class will be taught by three of Hudson River Yoga's own teachers, Teri Newman 200-RYT, Theresa Skelly 200-RYT and Nick Middlebrook 200-RYT.  Three teachers means three times the individual attention and alignment assists to help you find a greater depth and stillness in the pose, as well as a greater depth of release in restorative poses!

Please join us to help raise money for a great cause, we hope to see you there!

Monkeys, Marvels and Mystics, Oh My!

Sure practicing yoga poses can make us flexible, strong, calm, and healthy - all good things. What separates yoga from just exercise is the ability of this practice to expand our minds as we train our bodies.

Using mythology as our base, this workshop will explore how yoga asana practice translates universal, intangible ideas into physical expressions which resonate much deeper than the muscles, joints, and bones used to create them.

Our exploration will find modern relevance in stories from Ramayana, Mahabharata, The Bhagavad Gita, The Yoga Sutras, and The Hatha Yoga Pradipika. Bring a notebook and your mat - This workshop focuses on discussion, yet we may just find ourselves expressing poses from these stories.

Ronald Hayes, MFA, is an author and educator. His 2014 book, Gems on a String, combines reflections on his yoga practice with interpretations of the world's oldest epic poem, Ramayana.

Help For Harvey

Imagine if raging winds and rising flood waters separated you from your beloved dog or cat. That very nightmare has been unfolding over and over again for days in Houston and surrounding areas. Tropical Storm Harvey has displaced thousands of animals whose owners were unable to get to them in time, and local animal shelters are taking in more animals every day. The costs are overwhelming and are likely to continue to rise--as flood waters recede, more animals will emerge from hiding in desperate need of care.
Want to help? We do too. Please join us for a donation-based vinyasa class this coming Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. to benefit the SPCA of Texas. Longtime HRY teacher Monique Dauphin will lead us through a vigorous flow practice, followed by cool-down and deep relaxation. Some experience will flow-based yoga is recommended, but you will be encouraged to modify for your level. We suggest a donation of $20, and only cash or checks made out to the SPCA of Texas will be accepted. We can't wait to see you there!
